At Perlan you will find the Wonders of Iceland exhibition, which is a truly amazing collection of what Iceland has to offer. Guests can experience the power of volcanoes and earthquakes, walk through an ice cave and view a realistically constructed bird cliff, all in one place. On top of that, you’ll gain access to the Áróra - Northern lights Planetarium show which is also located in Perlan. Áróra is a Northern lights Planetarium Film which will take you on a journey across time and space, way beyond the traditional planetarium experience. Once you have delved into Iceland’s natural wonders you can step out to a large observation deck located on the fourth floor of Perlan. This is the place to get one of the best views of Reykjavík and its surrounding area.
But it is only half of the story to learn and read about the natural wonders of Iceland, the other is to explore them. This combination allows you to embark underground into a 5200-year-old Lava Tunnel and truly experience one of these wonders. The standard tour allows you to explore the tunnel in an easy and enjoyable manner. The impressive award-winning lighting in the tunnel highlights its changing colors in a unique way and shows the powerful volcanic activity that created the tunnel. Walk along the path that the lava flowed thousands of years ago where you will be able to sense first hand the immense power of the volcanic activity that formed the tunnel.
For most people although we do not recommend to those that have difficulties with balance, difficulties walking on uneven surface (such as snow or uneven path) or difficulties walking up or down steep stairs.
The tunnel is located less than 30 minutes drive (approximately 30 km) from Reykjavík and accessible by all vehicles. Driving from Reykjavík east on Route 1 and drive for about 18 km. Turn right onto Route 39 (Þorlákshöfn) and drive for another 12 km. The parking area will be on your left hand side. You can also find us on google maps.
