About the tour

As soon as your sightseeing tour starts, you will feel right at home in small group of maximum 12 people and 1 personal, knowledgeable guide. Within minutes into the scenic drive, you are surrounded by the moss-covered lava fields, where the smooth, flat Pahoehoe lava creates a beautiful backdrop that contrasts strongly against the rough, monster like exterior of the AA lava rock formations.

At one point in time, these lava fields were considered badlands: nearly impassable on foot and dangerous for the local livestock. Now, the lava fields are a great sightseeing opportunity for visitors who are looking to explore the natural beauty and wonders of Iceland, shaped by volcanic activity. Along the way, we will take our time to walk around, enjoy the beauty, and take pictures.

The Mid Atlantic Mountain Range

We continue our scenic drive into the heart of the Mid Atlantic Mountain Range to Kleifarvatn Lake, also known as Black Lake. With a maximum depth of 97 meters or roughly 300 feet, Black Lake is one of the deepest lakes in Iceland and one that is fed from previous volcanic activity rather than streams or rivers. Local stories have shaped the mystique of Black Lake by telling of a monster the size of a whale but shaped like a worm that lives within its murky depths. Yet, even the tales of this terrifying monster are not enough to deter people seeking adventure. During the summer months, Black Lake is a popular spot for fishing arctic char and is an attraction for the more brave and adventurous snorkelers and divers, looking to explore the geothermal hot springs found in some parts of the lake. On our sightseeing tour, we take our time capturing the beauty of lake, hoping to one day get a picture of the lake monster.

Standing on a Steaming Volcano
One of Iceland's most colorful geothermal sites, Krýsuvík features bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles. Here, you will get to safely walk above the volcano’s magma chamber on a boardwalk. With the chamber only 4km below your feet you can see the groundwater turn to steam. There are few as easily accessible places in the world that show as clearly as this one, the ongoing volcanic development. Krýsuvík is definitely not in its "dormant" stage, but that is what makes the mud pots and fumaroles so beautiful.

The Mystical Strandakirkja Coastline
We will continue the ever-scenic drive with a visit to the extinct volcanic crater of Eldborg. From there, the Atlantic Ocean comes into view with the most awe-inspiring ocean breaker waves. Once we reach the coastal road, we head east along the coastline to Strandakirkja, a church built by local fishermen after a miracle rescue. We will take the time to visit the church that has been central in Iceland’s seamen’s prayers for centuries, as well as venture down to the coastline where you can see how lava flows have shaped the coast and, with luck, maybe even spot a few seals sunbathing on the lava rocks.

The Lava Tunnel Caving Tour
The final stop will be a journey into Raufarhólshellir. This is a unique experience and a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption, as we walk in the path of lava that flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred east of the Bláfjöll mountains about 5200 years ago. This lava tube is equipped with lights and an installed walking platform, making it easily accessible to walk through.

Once in the tunnel, the underworld opens up, as the beams of our headlamps reflect off the walls, creating vibrant shades of colors ranging from bright yellow to purple and red. As you move through the lava tube, you will see lava straws hanging from the ceiling and lava stalagmite by the walls of the tunnel. The sights inside the lava tube are unique and exclusive to the incredible workings of a volcanic eruption.

After exiting the cave, we can reminisce on our experiences over a warm cup of hot chocolate before heading back to Reykjavik, concluding our short half day adventure tour in the Reykjanes Geo Park.

Join this tour to experience the extraordinary beauty of  the volcanic Reykjanes Geopark.

Formed over 5000 years ago, Raufarhólshellir lava tube cave is one of the largest of more than 600 lava tunnels found in Iceland. On the inside it measures up to 30 feet high and 100 feet wide and with three huge skylights in the roof there is no reason to feel claustrophobic. The walkway makes it effortless for anyone to enjoy and the installed lights bring out the range of natural colors that are unique to the lava caves.
